Un LAN party è un evento dedicato ai videogiochi multigiocatore, e prevede che i partecipanti – quasi sempre adolescenti – si riuniscano in un unico luogo portandosi il computer da casa e allestendo una rete locale, o LAN, per ingaggiare una battaglia senza esclusione di colpi. Esistono LAN party di varie dimensioni, con un numero di partecipanti che va da 2 a più di 4000; come i più noti rave party, possono essere spontanei o frutto di una impegnativa organizzazione, e durare poche ore o diversi giorni. La locuzione “LAN party”, evocando l'idea della festa, chiarisce la natura ludica e partecipativa di questi eventi, ma ne cela altri interessanti aspetti: l'immersione totale, quasi mistica, dei giocatori; lo sdoppiamento dell'esistenza - e del divertimento - che si svolge parallelamente nel reale e sullo schermo; il coinvolgimento fisico in una guerra virtuale; il sudore, l'adrenalina, l'imperversare di cavi di rete e fili elettrici, la ritualità e le sottoculture pop che convergono nei LAN; la violenza virtuale e l'amicizia reale che si alternano continuamente in questa versione postmoderna dei tornei medievali.
GAMERS documenta tutti questi aspetti. Il progetto fotografico dell'artista americano Todd Deutsch si sofferma, di volta in volta, sulle espressioni dei giocatori, la loro immersione totale nello schermo, le loro passioni, i loro rituali, i loro simboli; e ancora, l'intrico dei fili, l'atmosfera algida creata dalla luce dei monitor, il senso di sospensione che si genera quando il gioco è fermo. E lo fa con i mezzi di una fotografia tersa ed elegante, solo apparentemente estranea al soggetto, in realtà in grado di sottolinearne – attraverso raffinati richiami alla tradizione pittorica occidentale – la parentela con altri riti: la guerra, la preghiera...
Il progetto, tuttora in progress, è frutto della University of Minnesota/ McKnight Fellowship for Photographers ottenuta dall'artista nel 2005. Accanto ad essa, Todd Deutsch può vantare diverse mostre, personali e collettive, negli Stati Uniti, e un recentissimo premio acquisto ottenuto dal Walker Art Center di Minneapolis, Ohio (2007). Suoi lavori compaiono in diverse collezioni museali, tra cui: Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago, Illinois); Tris- escuela de fotografia (Montevideo, Uruguay); e Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, Ohio). La presente personale è la sua prima europea.

A LAN party is an event dedicated to multiplayer videogames, where the participants, usually adolescents, converge in a single venue, each bringing their computer from home and setting up a local network, or LAN, to do battle to the last gasp. LAN parties can vary in size, from 2 people to more than 4,000; like their rave counterparts they can be spontaneous gatherings or the result of extensive organization, and they can last anything from a few hours up to a few days. The term “LAN party” evokes their festive spirit and reveals the fun, social nature of these events, but conceals other interesting aspects: the complete, almost mystic absorption of the players; their dual form of existence – and enjoyment - both on screen and in real life; physical involvement in virtual combat; the sweat, the adrenalin, the tangle of network cables and power leads, the rituals and pop subcultures that converge, and the virtual violence and real-life friendships that alternate in this postmodern version of a Medieval tournament
GAMERS documents all these aspects. The photographic project by American artist Todd Deutsch takes in the expressions on the players’ faces, their total immersion in the events on screen, their passions, their rituals, their symbols; as well as the tangles of cable, the icy glow of monitor light, and the general feeling of suspension generated when there is a break in play. His photography is clean and elegant, only apparently distanced from his subject but, thanks to refined references to Western art, able to underline its rapport with other rites: war, prayer...
This work in progress is the result of the University of Minnesota/ McKnight Fellowship for Photographers the artist won in 2005. Alongside this, Todd Deutsch boasts numerous exhibitions, solo and group events in the United States, and a recent prize from the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Ohio (2007). His work can be found in various collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago, Illinois); Tris- escuela de fotografia (Montevideo, Uruguay); and the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, Ohio). This solo exhibition is his first European event.
On occasion of the exhibition the gallery will publish the book ‘Gamers’
