Gazira Babeli è un'artista, performer e filmmaker che vive e lavora nel mondo virtuale di Second Life (http://secondlife.com/), dove è nata il 31 marzo 2006. In breve tempo si è guadagnata attenzione e rispetto con le sue performance provocatorie, che indagano i temi del corpo, dello spazio e dell'identità nei mondi virtuali. Ha partecipato a festival e mostre in Italia (Peam 2006 - The Diamond, Pescara 2006), all'estero (Deaf 2007, Rotterdam 2007) e in Second Life, e ha appena concluso la sua prima retrospettiva, intitolata "Gazira Babeli: [Collateral Damage]" e organizzata dalla ExhibitA gallery (Odyssey 38,30,23, Second Life, 10 aprile - 31 maggio 2007). Il suo lavoro ha suscitato l'attenzione di testate quali El Pais, La Stampa, Liberazione, Exibart e Kunstzeitung. Esistendo solo in Second Life, Gazira Babeli concentra il proprio lavoro sulla propria identità di artista virtuale, e sulla costruzione di una personale mitologia - in linea, peraltro, con molti artisti del Novecento, da Marcel Duchamp a Yves Klein, da Joseph Beuys a Matthew Barney. Da questa ricerca nasce il trittico video Saint Gaz' Stylite, che viene presentato qui in anteprima assoluta, e che prelude al film Gaz' of the Desert, il primo film in alta definizione interamente girato in un mondo virtuale. Gazira racconta la propria vita virtuale appropriandosi del genere classico dell'agiografia, e descrive Second Life come una sorta di mondo immaginario a metà strada tra la magia della forma cinematografica (da Méliés a Buster Keaton) e l'irrazionalità apparente della Surrealtà bretoniana. Saint Gaz' Stylite è un film girato dentro un film, il racconto poetico della nostra vita dentro a uno schermo, la metafora perfetta dell'immersione nel virtuale, tra isolamento e socialità, ascetismo e tentazione.

Gazira Babeli is an artist, performer and filmmaker who lives and works in the virtual world of Second Life (http://secondlife.com/), where she was born on 31 March 2006. In a short space of time she has earned respect and captured attention with her provocative performances which explore issues regarding the body, space and identity in virtual worlds. She has taken part in festivals and shows in Italy (Peam 2006 - The Diamond, Pescara 2006), abroad (Deaf 2007, Rotterdam 2007) and in Second Life, and has just concluded her first retrospective, entitled "Gazira Babeli: [Collateral Damage]", hosted by the ExhibitA gallery (Odyssey 38,30,23, Second Life, 10 April - 31 May 2007). Her work has come to the attention of publications such as El Pais, La Stampa, Liberazione, Exibart and Kunstzeitung. As she exists only in Second Life, she focuses her work on her identity as a virtual artist, and on building her own personal legend, in line with many artists of the twentieth century, from Marcel Duchamp to Yves Klein, from Joseph Beuys to Matthew Barney. This exploration is at the heart of the video triptych Saint Gaz' Stylite, which premieres here, a prelude to the film “Gaz' of the Desert”, the first high definition movie entirely shot within a virtual world. Gazira tells her virtual life story using the classic genre of hagiography, and presents second Life as a kind of imaginary world midway between the magic of the movies (from Méliés to Buster Keaton) and the apparent irrationality of Bretonian ‘surreality’. Saint Gaz' Stylite is a movie within a movie, a poetic account of our lives behind a screen, the perfect metaphor for our immersion in the virtual dimension, between isolation and social existence, asceticism and temptation.
